Each time a major honors show nears, one notices an outcry for introducing fresh award types to recognize underappreciated efforts and fill the spirits of enthusiasts who have specialized interests.
A fellow writer has already made for a horror game category. It would be amazing. So would tabletop games, which is a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist for pushing forward just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, there's a strong justification supporting my request is the most urgent and significant. The demand is this: We need a category for puzzle games.
Organizing Gaming Categories
Organizing artistic expressions isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and inevitably spark debates and end in fuzzy definitions. It's understandable that cinema institutions steer clear of genre categories. Yet it remains an essential concession for the industry of interactive entertainment, showing incredible range it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.
For the full spectrum of gaming accomplishments to be recognized, and for games of all stripes to have a chance for representation, genre categories are essential.
Current Gaming Award Categories
Leading game ceremonies offer these genre categories for Action, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these award types actually cover many game types, making space possible for most games within them.
Not so for logic-based experiences. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Examine these examples from this year’s best games, all very different: building puzzles from a specific release, fast-paced pattern recognition in a different title, thought-provoking social scenarios from additional release. Where could they possibly go between these six categories? Simply put, no category fits.
The Representation Problem
Numerous examples exist outstanding logic titles launched regularly that have no home during gaming ceremonies, if they accidentally match for categories like Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive Indie races.
- An iconic brain-teaser received no recognition for anything during that awards season
- A different innovative game received no nominations during that ceremony
- A beloved organization game received no acknowledgment in 2021
- Just some puzzle games scraped into small studio or handheld classifications
Significance of Puzzle Games
These are often modest productions, yet the craft behind logic titles carries substantial weight. Well-known matching games count as most popular titles worldwide maintaining this status for over a decade.
The legendary block-stacking game challenges popular creative games competing to become best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Puzzle games are foundational for gaming as medium, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.
Proposal and Rationale
Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. One could readily select a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences every year with ease — actually, with challenge, given the need to exclude numerous deserving experiences.
And to reiterate, these represent titles lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers are working at the demanding boundary game development, producing among the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay generations.
